BEAD GURU - T O M H O L L A N D

Legendary beadmaker Tom Holland has been instrumental in unlocking the myth of ancient glass working techniques and sharing these traditional methods of beadmaking with a whole new audience. A natural storyteller, Tom is an inspirational teacher. This is an exciting opportunity to learn from a true master-craftsman.

This workshop is for the intermediate to advanced beadmaker who wants to enhance their understanding of layering colors and techniques from ancient times . Tom will facilitate the deepening of participants command of complexity in design creating more intricate and hence more unique pattens and shapes by following a list of skill building examples from the history of Glass Beadmaking

TANK is pleased to rent hourly studio time to customers and others experienced with glass.

What You Get

•One time free orientation to familiarize you with TANK equipment and safety procedures.
• Up to 30 minutes prep time to prepare, or clean beads from a previous session.
•One Nortel Minor Bench Burner oxygen propane torch
Dydimum glasses
•Basic tools (table top graphite pad, hand marver, tweezers, mashers, tungsten poker, knife, water can, Dremel tool for cleaning beads, 1/8th mandrels, sludge, arrow springs annealing kiln)

Who Can Rent

Students who have taken at least one beginner class at TANK or have taken an equivalent class at a reputable studio / school. If you are a first time renter you need to book a half hour orientation session with Amy or Jill prior to doing any work. When renting time you are allowed up to 30 minutes to get set up and clean a previous sessions beads before being charged by the hour. Time will be rounded to the hour.

Making Glass Beads – 3 Part Series with Amy Johnson

[ Skill Level : New Beginner / Advanced Beginner ]

An introduction to the exciting art of working with hot glass and making flameworked beads. It’s the perfect place to start for total beginners or a great refresher. Amy is a technical master who will show students many techniques to build a solid foundation of skills. Students will be able to create their own designs based on what they learn. The 3 classes introduce an excellent overview of what’s possible in glass beadmaking!

$295 / Level - including all materials

+ 3 hours FREE torch time to practice with each level you complete. (valid for two weeks)

Beginner Beadmaking - Level 1 – [ 4 weeks ]

Mar 24th - April 14th, Wed Evenings 6:30-9:30

Techniques - round beads, dots, stringer applications, striped beads, feathering, raking, tubes & bicones, simple encasing, silver leaf

Beginner Beadmaking - Level 2 – [ 5 weeks ]

April 21st - May 19th, Wed Evenings 6:30-9:30

Techniques - off mandrel (pendants & buttons,) layers, sculptural, reactive glass, masking, fancy stringer, studio set up, safety & tools

* note: level 2 includes a free 5th week on studio setup & safety

Beginner / Intermediate Beadmaking - Level 3 – [ 4 weeks ]

May 26thth - June 16thth, Wed Evenings 6:30-9:30

Techniques - ribbon cane, simple murrine, focal beads, multiple beads (for production), marbles, thick encasing, encased florals and individual interest topics

Making Glass Beads – Two Day Weekend Class with Amy Johnson

[ Skill Level : New Beginner / Advanced Beginner ]

May 19th & 20th, 10am - 5pm

An introduction to the exciting art of working with hot glass and making flameworked beads. It’s the perfect place to start or a great refresher. This 2 day class gives an excellent taste of what’s possible in glass beadmaking! Typically students make between 20 - 30 beads.

Class Fee $295 (includes materials)

12 Hours (1 hour lunch each day)

Private Classes – One on One - All Skill Levels

$40/hr (min 3 hr) or $235/day

Focus your studies on specific areas of interest with expert flameworking teacher Amy Johnson.

Privately Booked Classes / Events

$95/person (min 5 people, max 8)

Gather your friends, family or co-workers and play with fire and colour in this fun 3 hour experience oriented class. You’ll learn to make 3 or 4 styles of glass beads using an oxygen propane torch with teaching duo Amy Johnson & Jill Cribbin. Make approximately 10 to 20 beads!

Multi Session Classes

A 50% deposit is required to hold a space for multi-day classes. The balance is due on the first day of class. In the case of a class cancellation by TANK, the deposit is fully refunded or student is provided the option to transfer into another class. If a student wishes to cancel minimum 3 weeks notice prior class start date must be provided for a full refund (less any applicable administration expenses.)

One Session Classes

Full payment due at time of booking for all one session classes.

International Teacher Classes

Missed Classes

If a class is missed in a multi session class taught by TANK instructors, the instructor will provide a verbal description of what was missed. No refund will be issued for that class. A make up class may be scheduled at the students expense (discounted rates may apply,) or they may be able to join that class the next time it runs.
